The ADA Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award (OSAA) is to recognize outstanding scientific achievement by a scientist less than 50 years of age in diabetes research that demonstrates independence of thought, originality, significance of discovery, and impact on his/her area of research. Dr. Jiandie Lin received this prestigious award for his contribution to our understanding of inter-organ crosstalk of emerging endocrine hormones, and his pioneering research on chromatin control of metabolic gene programs.

Dr. Lin is Bradley M. Patten Collegiate Professor of Life Sciences in the Life Sciences Institute and Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Lin received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in biochemistry from Peking University (1994) and his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology from Northwestern University (2000). Dr. Lin received his postdoctoral training with Dr. Bruce Spiegelman at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. His postdoctoral work revealed the critical role of the PGC-1 transcriptional coactivators in mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative metabolism and metabolic physiology. In 2005, Dr. Lin started his independent research career in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology and Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan. The current research in Dr. Lin’s laboratory focuses on the fundamental biology of metabolic signaling, disease pathogenesis and new therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic disorders. His laboratory has been very productive and has published over 100 research papers in the high-profile journals including Nature, Nature Medicine, Molecular Cell, Cell Metabolism, and JCI. Dr. Lin was the president of the CADA (2015-2018), and is currently an associate editor of Diabetes.

On June 15th 2020, more than 130 CADA members and colleagues joined a special CADA Happy Hour Event and celebrated Dr. Jiandie Lin’s accomplishments. The whole event lasted about one and half hours. It was moderated by Drs. Qingchun Tong (UT-Houston) and Jun Liu (Mayo Clinic), and started by an introduction by Dr. Xiaoyong Yang (Yale), followed by remarks from Dr. Lin’s colleagues and close friends at University of Michigan, the representatives of our CADA senior members, Drs. Ling Qi, Eugene Chen, and Liangyou Rui. Then three trainees from Dr. Lin’s lab (Drs. Jing Xiong, Zhuoxian Meng, and Xuelian Xiong) shared their own experiences working with Dr. Lin, expressing their happiness, respect, and gratitude to be part of the Lin lab family. Dr. Lin spoke about the history of the award, and shared his feelings about receiving the award. He then shared his suggestions and personal experiences on how to succeed in biomedical research, how to balance work and life, how to deal with stress in research career, how to collaborate and communicate with colleagues in the field, and what the award means to our CADA community. After Dr. Lin’s speech, many CADA members congratulated Dr. Lin and shared their own stories about Dr. Lin’s dedication to science and generosity in supporting junior colleagues. Finally, the celebration event ended with a closing remark by Dr. Meilian Liu (New Mexico), the new president of CADA. Dr. Liu congratulated Dr. Lin on behalf of the association and shared a set of photos taken during previous CADA annual meetings. The program ended with Dr. Lin’s Award Lecture entitled “Emerging Endocrine and Paracrine Hormones in Health and Metabolic Disease”. In summary, this was a really sweet Happy Hour Event organized by the newly formed CADA board. We all appreciate Dr. Jiandie Lin as a role model for our community. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jiandie Lin for receiving this prestigious ADA award and his contributions to basic and translational diabetes research. We wish Dr. Jiandie Lin continued success in discovering the molecular mechanisms and new therapeutics of Diabetes. We hope that our CADA members together achieve these goals. Go CADA!
